What Happens in Sex Therapy?
Starting sex therapy can feel intimidating, especially if you are not sure what to expect. Many people wonder, "Will this be awkward?" "Do I have to talk about everything right away?" or "What if I feel embarrassed?"
Sex therapy is a type of talk therapy that helps people explore concerns related to intimacy, desire, arousal, sexual pain, communication, shame, anxiety, relationship stress, and emotional connection. It is not about judgment, pressure, or forcing you to do anything you are uncomfortable with.
Sex therapy is also not physical or hands-on. Sessions are focused on conversation, education, emotional support, and helping you better understand what may be affecting intimacy.
What the First Sessions Look Like
In the beginning, your therapist may ask questions about your relationship history, sexual concerns, stress levels, mental health, body image, medical history, past experiences, and what you hope will change.
You do not have to share everything at once. Therapy moves at a pace that feels safe and respectful.
Questions Sex Therapy May Explore
For women struggling with low desire, sex therapy may explore questions like:
- Why does intimacy feel stressful or pressured?
- What gets in the way of feeling connected?
- How do anxiety, stress, hormones, body image, or relationship patterns affect desire?
- What would help intimacy feel more emotionally safe and mutual?
Sex therapy can also include communication support, helping you understand your own experience and your partner's without blame.
The Real Goal
The goal is not simply to "have more sex." The goal is to create a healthier, safer, and more connected relationship with intimacy.
Sex therapy can be especially helpful if you feel confused, disconnected, ashamed, anxious, pressured, or unsure how to talk about sex in your relationship. You do not have to have the "right words" before starting therapy. You just need a willingness to be curious about what is happening and what support may help.
